Submissions for the 2020 festival are now open and we look forward to receiving entries from film makers around the world. Those selected as finalists will be shown at the Rio Cinema in June 2020.

Your film must reach us by midnight (GMT) on 30th April 2020. No film will be accepted after this deadline.

We will accept films in the three categories of documentary, drama and animation that are no longer than 10 minutes in length.

  • Films will only be accepted at the FilmFreeway portal. This offers Secure Online Screeners  and is our only method of submission.

  • No postal submissions will be accepted.

  • Refunds will not be offered if you fail to adhere to these rules.

Press and Publicity

Should your film be accepted we will request digital images and other press/publicity materials you may have available at that time. You agree to provide these on request and in a timely manner.

  • Films preferably must not have been released in the UK in any format, including online, or shown on UK television prior to the festival dates. This does not include other festival screenings.

  • Films completed after January 1st 2019 are eligible for submission.

  • All foreign language films must be subtitled in English (cost to be covered by the applicant) either dubbed or with subtitles.

  • All rights, permissions and clearances must be obtained prior to submission and applicants must ensure that they have the right to submit the work with regard to third parties connected to the production of the film in question. By entering your work, you agree to this and the responsibilities involved. Neither Hackney Shorts nor Stoke Newington Literary Festival assumes and has no responsibility for violation of copyright law or breach of any law or regulation whatsoever.

Please note that submission fees will not be refunded if your film does not meet these conditions.

In order to cover administrative costs, we are charging a small fee of approximately £10 (£5 concessions).

Fees will not be waived under any circumstances so please do not contact us to request that we make an exception, as we won’t be able to help you.

Methods of Payment

All entries must be made through Film Freeway which has an online payment method.

Any publicity materials should be sent in digital format to:

Receipt of Submission

Once you have submitted your film online, please check your account to find out if the Festival has received your submission.

Selection will be carried out by the Hackney Shorts team and judges. No correspondence will be entered into regarding the selection process and the decision of Hackney Shorts is final. We aim to inform shortlisted entrants on or around 17 May 2020. Unfortunately, we will be unable to offer individual feedback or enter into any discussion about your work.

Successful submissions will be listed on our website and successful applicants will be notified by email. Please therefore make sure that we can reach you during May 2020 so that we can liaise with you about events and publicity. At this point we will also request you send us digital press kits and that you arrange print transport during that period.

Please note that only successful applicants will be notified personally.

Screenings and Scheduling

All screenings will take place at the discretion of Hackney Shorts. We reserve the right to make changes to the advertised schedule at any time for any reason and will not accept liability for any costs incurred as a result of such changes.
